Dove #Loveyourhair Campaign
Our mothers are our first example of self love, teaching us the importance of knowing our own power. When I became a mother it became very clear that everything I did influenced my daughter. I remember when my daughter was around the age of 3, she asked me why her hair wasn't straight like mine. I then had to wash my hair and show her that she got her curls from me. I've always worn my hair natural and curly, I would experiment with different colors from time to time but never anything permanent. I started flat ironing my hair more when my daughter was little because it was just something fun to do. I never realized that it was making an impact on how she valued her own hair.
After having that conversation with my daughter I started asking my friends to show my daughter their natural hair. Really getting everyone I knew involved in this self love project but simply being more aware. We often don't realize the impact we have on the youth when we are our organic selves. For women there are so many products and images that influence us to change ourselves. When in reality we shine the most when we master the art of celebrating our true selves. Hair is something that can be fun, but it can also be a sore spot for some. Curly hair for me is a blessing, I am able to wear my hair in many different styles. That's one thing I am consistently telling my daughter, to celebrate her versatility. I taught her how to wash and condition her curls, how to comb them out and keep them moisturized. Knowledge on maintenance of hair can make a world of difference in how young girls love their hair.
Making sure I keep positive images in our home of curly haired girls. Getting her dolls with curly hair have also made a huge difference. The biggest lesson I have learned from being a mother is that the more I love myself, the more my daughter will do the same. I make sure I tell her at least once a day that her curls are perfect. There comes a time when we must all love ourselves and believe in our own beauty. However as a mother, I must lay down that foundation for my daughters. Even though her curls are brown and blonde and mine are black, we celebrate all textures and colors in our home.
Always be a living example of love and empowerment for your children.
