AmirahLee Turns 6
Time is the only constant thing in this world with love allowing it to pass by smoothly. The greatest gift in this world has and will always be the birth of my daughter. She is pure joy with a side of sass and bold honesty. I love being able to watch my little lady grow into a young lady and one day a woman. AmirahLee was a surprise pregnancy. I was told I would never have children when I was sixteen years old. Her spirit has always been one of love and healing. Especially with her being born exactly one year after my sister passed away.
As I watch my daughter grow and transcend from one age to another, I embrace the challenges that come along with it. For Amirah's birthday I took her to the Devachan Salon in Culver City, California. Being natural my entire life, I remember my mother always made sure we embraced our inner and outer beauty. So for Amirah's birthday I just wanted to do something special for her while celebrating her natural beauty. Her two God moms flew in to surprise her for her birthday and got their curls fluffed and moisturized along with her. The day was filled with love and laughter.
Even though moving was extremely hard and not the most ideal situation while planning a wedding, we've been able to stick together and make things work for the best. For the past five years, Amirah has been surrounded by all of her family and friends for her birthdays. It's usually a celebration in our house in Ohio and I spend weeks planning it and days cleaning up. I was worried that Amirah wouldn't enjoy her birthday due to her being the only child at the actual celebration. I mean going to American Girl with your parents, Godparents and Abuela isn't really every child's dream, however we made the best of the situation. After her aunts spoiled her rotten, we walked around The Grove (outdoor fashion district; think Easton with Palm Trees) and just enjoyed the weather. Amirah had a magical day and was extremely happy to be showered with love.
I realized that even though we are away from family, we are always loved and honored by our friends. I am so happy Amirah's God moms came into town and my friends who live here were able to call off of work to spend time with her on her special day. Most importantly my mom being here again for the second time has really helped things run smoothly.
Letting go of how things use to be and embracing the new direction of our family is challenging. Knowing we have amazing friends and family to help us along the way makes it that much easier.
